The 52-year-old took charge of his present team for the first time since being named manager of Manchester United. Ten Hag led his squad to a 1-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen, bringing them one step closer to winning the Eredivisie.

Ajax’s victory came just hours after Manchester United’s trip to Arsenal. United was defeated 3-1 at the Emirates, their second loss of the week and third in the last four games.

United’s chances of qualifying in the top four are all but over, having fallen six points behind Arsenal with four games remaining. Ten Hag will most likely not be able to play in the Champions League when he comes to Old Trafford at the end of the season.

United’s latest defeat highlighted the monumental task that Ten Hag faces ahead of the summer. Speaking after Ajax’s most recent victory, the Dutchman said he was not losing focus on his current position.

“I’m constantly concentrated and focused on the job at hand,” Ten Hag stated. “I don’t care what’s going on around me. You’re always thinking about the future, but my thoughts and my energy are focused on Ajax.”

When asked about United’s loss at Arsenal, Ten Hag replied, “I don’t have an opinion on it.” I showed respect for the guys that are now at Man United, and I’m in charge of Ajax.”

Despite his refusal to speak about his next team on Saturday, Ten Hag has already revealed his reasons for leaving Ajax. “This is already a bonus year,” he stated in an interview with Trouw.

“Things were already happening last summer, but I wanted to have another fantastic season with Ajax and enjoy the winter in the Champions League.” Because I started when I was hired that Ajax needed to become “Europe proof.” That was effective. But we’re not finished yet.”
