Although Inter Milan is holding out for a higher fee closer to €60 million, there is optimism that a compromise can be reached between the two clubs.

Personal terms are expected to be easily negotiated, as Onana is reportedly open to the move and eager to reunite with Erik ten Hag, with whom he previously worked at Ajax.

Manchester United is keen to pursue the 27-year-old goalkeeper as uncertainty looms over the future of David de Gea at Old Trafford.

De Gea’s contract with United officially expired on June 30. Last month, The Athletic reported that the 32-year-old had agreed to a contract extension with United, but the club later backed out of the deal that had been previously agreed upon.

De Gea had agreed to a substantial pay cut from his current £375,000 per week wages, but the contract was not signed by the club.

As a result, Manchester United is actively exploring options in the goalkeeper market, with Onana emerging as their preferred choice. It is worth noting that Chelsea had also shown interest in the former Cameroon international in the past.

If the deal for Onana materializes, it is expected to pave the way for Nottingham Forest to proceed with their bid for Dean Henderson, as the uncertainty surrounding United’s goalkeeping situation has temporarily stalled progress on that potential transfer.
