Manchester United endured yet another disappointing defeat, losing 3-2 to Galatasaray at Old Trafford. This result is cause for serious concern, marking their second consecutive Champions League defeat and the fifth loss in seven games.

Despite some promising attacking moments, the team’s performance was marred by critical mistakes and a lack of concentration, resulting in the 3-2 defeat. Let’s take a closer look at the four players who had a challenging night:

  1. Andre Onana:
Starting with the most glaring issue, Andre Onana’s goalkeeping performance was deeply problematic. He seemed invisible for all three of Galatasaray’s goals, consistently poorly positioned and failing to make meaningful saves. His errant pass to Dries Mertens led to Casemiro conceding a penalty and receiving a red card, leaving United with 10 men. Onana’s confidence appears shaken, and his tenure at Manchester United has been marred by a series of costly errors, particularly in Champions League matches. A reliable goalkeeper instills confidence in the entire team, but Onana’s form has had the opposite effect, leaving the defense unsettled. It may be time to consider a change in goal.
  2. Diogo Dalot:
Diogo Dalot, playing at right-back due to an injury crisis among full-backs, had a challenging game. While we should acknowledge the lack of alternatives, his performance was subpar. He was directly at fault for Galatasaray’s first goal, misjudging a long ball and easily shrugged off by Wilfried Zaha. Additionally, he received an unnecessary booking in the first half. Dalot doesn’t fit the mold of an impact-making marauding right-back or an exceptionally solid defender. He falls somewhere in between, offering little beyond his availability.
  3. Sofyan Amrabat:
Sofyan Amrabat, who was primarily signed to play in midfield, was asked to fill in at left-back due to an injury crisis. While his adaptability is commendable, this experiment may need to come to an end, especially at the Champions League level. United had alternatives in actual defenders like Lindelof or Evans who could have been deployed in the left-back position, allowing Amrabat to play in his natural midfield role. His performance highlighted the challenges of playing out of position at this level.
  4. Bruno Fernandes:
Manchester United’s captain had an off night, marked by wastefulness and poor decision-making. Bruno Fernandes had an early chance in the opening minutes of the game, but his shot was wildly off target. Throughout the match, he attempted five shots, none of which looked threatening. Only one shot was on target, and it was directly at the goalkeeper. This was a critical match where United needed Fernandes to step up, but unfortunately, he, like many others on the team, struggled to make an impact.
