Mourinho, in November, had voiced concerns about Smalling’s ability to play through pain due to chronic knee issues, stating,

“Smalling isn’t capable of playing through pain. He holds something back. His specific issue is a real challenge.”

In the wake of Mourinho’s dismissal, Smalling took to social media to address the speculations surrounding his future.

He emphasized his commitment to AS Roma since joining in 2019, expressing a strong connection with the club and its fans.

Smalling clarified, “Let me start by clarifying that I have never asked to, nor even contemplated, leaving this great club.”

Acknowledging recent frustrations due to injuries, he highlighted the uncontrollable nature of certain aspects of football and life.

The defender admitted the challenging months away from the pitch but affirmed his dedication to returning stronger.

He stated, “I have, and will always, put the needs of my teammates first,” emphasizing the medical team’s focus on ensuring his significant contribution in the latter part of the season and beyond.
