The 1-0 defeat to Newcastle highlighted a recurring issue under manager Erik ten Hag, who has struggled to secure away wins against top-eight teams since taking over in the summer of 2022.

Neville, in his weekend analysis for Sky Sports, criticized United’s lack of control in the match and acknowledged that poor performances partially stem from the players.

He pointed out that only Louis van Gaal, post-Sir Alex Ferguson, managed to imprint a distinctive style on the team, emphasizing the failure of subsequent managers, including ten Hag, to do so.

The former United player highlighted the dwindling excuses for ten Hag, given the significant financial investment and the successful transformations witnessed at other Premier League clubs in a shorter time frame.

Neville emphasized the lack of a consistent style or pattern of play at United since Van Gaal’s departure, contrasting it with managers like De Zerbi and Postecoglou achieving impactful changes within months.

Neville questioned the team’s struggles to establish a clear style in the last eight years and expressed concern about their upcoming fixtures.

He criticized the midfield’s inconsistency, echoing Paul Scholes’s comments, and admitted finding it difficult to be optimistic about United’s current state.

In a poignant statement, Neville revealed his reluctance to watch or commentate on United’s games and expressed apprehension about the team’s future performances, indicating a significant loss of confidence in the club.
