The rumored contract deal between Robert Lewandowski and Barcelona might have major ramifications for Manchester City, with the Pole’s exit opening the way for Bayern Munich to compete for Erling Haaland.
Lewandowski, 33, joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2014 following three outstanding seasons at the Signal Iduna Park. Since moving to the Allianz Arena, he has been regarded as one of the world’s best attackers, scoring an amazing 340 goals in 369 games for Die Roten.
However, a departure from the club appears to be on the cards. According to a report by the Polish news outlet Interia Sport, Lewandowski has already agreed to terms with Barcelona and wants to join the Catalan giants this summer. This would open up a striker berth at Bayern, who are surely looking for a world-class striker to replace Lewandowski.
And, given their previous dealings with Dortmund for the signings of Lewandowski, Mats Hummels, and Mario Gotze, it is not out of the question that Bayern may raid them again for Haaland. The Norwegian prodigy’s £68 million release clause becomes active in the summer, alerting the majority of Europe’s elite as they search to buy a long-term striker.
After failing to replace Sergio Aguero in the summer, City is desperate for a striker. Tottenham rejected proposals for Harry Kane that were deemed inadequate. And Haaland is thought to be their major goal, though their intentions may be jeopardized if Lewandowski leaves.
Despite the fact that his contract expires at the end of next season, Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn believes the club will keep the Polish star. “Robert Lewandowski is an amazing marvel, not only because of his goals, which he continues to score but also because of the level at which he has been playing for so many years,” Kahn stated in January.
