They’ve been connected with Diogo Costa and David Raya, but Onana of Inter Milan has emerged as their priority target in that area.

Onana formerly worked with Erik ten Hag at Ajax and is regarded as one of the world’s top ball-playing goalkeepers.

United had two bids for Onana rejected, but journalist Rudy Galetti now reports that the two clubs have reached a verbal agreement on a transfer fee.

The Premier League club will allegedly pay an initial fee of £42 million for Onana, with an additional £5 million available in prospective add-ons.

Galetti wrote, ‘New contacts expected in the next 24/48h to discuss specifics and finalize the trade; the goalie is ready to join Man United.’

Onana will join the rest of Inter’s team for pre-season training this week, according to Inter manager Simone Inzaghi, but a move to Manchester United is feasible.

“He’s an Inter player, tomorrow (Thursday) he’ll be among the players called up for pre-season, we know the transfer window is unpredictable and that all Italian clubs have to sell before they can buy,” Inzaghi explained.

“We know there’s this risk (he goes), but at the same time, I’m calm about it all because the club and the owners have reassured me that this year we’ll have a competitive Inter.”
