The Red Devils suffered a comprehensive 3-0 loss, with Erling Haaland netting twice and Phil Foden adding a late goal.

Former United defender Neville provided co-commentary during the match and was displeased with captain Fernandes’s actions late in the game.

Fernandes, the Portuguese midfielder, seemed to be charging around and making several late challenges, culminating in a heavy tackle on John Stones.

However, after the incident, the United captain was seen clutching his own ankle as Stones walked away.

Neville commented on the incident, saying, “He’s trying to do someone there, Fernandes. He’s trying to do John Stones, but he’s seen him coming and he’s ended up hurting himself.”

Neville continued to criticize Fernandes for his actions and suggested that the midfielder was merely trying to improve his performance late in the game.

He added, “He’s not fooling anyone with what he’s been attempting to do over the past few minutes.”

In the closing minutes of the match, Fernandes was seen complaining to referee Paul Tierney after receiving a yellow card for a lunging tackle on City winger Jeremy Doku.

Neville remarked, “There’s the couple of complaints that I promised you.”

Fernandes is now walking a disciplinary tightrope, as one more yellow card will result in a one-match suspension.

Antony, the Brazilian winger, also faced criticism from Neville. He clashed with Doku after coming on as a substitute, kicking out at him before exchanging stern words.

Antony eventually received a booking, but Neville argued that he should have been sent off. He said, “Doku is absolutely right; Antony just kicked at him.

United has lost their discipline, starting with the captain. It’s absolutely ridiculous; I would just send him off. It’s embarrassing.”

United will have the opportunity to bounce back during the midweek as they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup third round at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag’s side will then travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham the following Saturday. They have further matches against Copenhagen and Luton Town before the final international break of the year.
