With Portugal’s World Cup play-off on the line last week, all eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo or Bruno Fernandes to deliver. Instead, a lower-profile attacker, Porto winger Otavio, broke the deadlock.

It should come as no surprise that the 27-year-old was linked with a move to Manchester United a few days later.

According to the Portuguese publication, A Bola Otavio has been added to Manchester United’s ever-expanding list of prospective transfer targets for next season.

Manchester United is apparently interested in Otavio de Sousa of Portugal.

2) Otavio played for Brazil at the under-20 level before transferring to Portugal last season, where he has two caps in three games.

3) Otavio has had a productive season with Porto, contributing 11 assists and scoring five goals. This is a career-high number of assists, surpassing the nine he delivered two years ago and the eight he provided last season.

4) Otavio has a long-term contract with Porto, having signed a contract in March that runs through June 2025.

5) Among Otavio’s former managers are Brazil icon Dunga and former Wolves and Tottenham manager Nuno Santo.

How much would Otavio cost?

According to The Mail, Otavio’s contract has a £50 million release clause. For United, this is a manageable figure.

Transfermarkt values him at £22.5 million, which is significantly less than his true worth.

What role does Otavio play?

United are reportedly interested in signing a winger, with Ajax’s Antony mentioned by The Telegraph and Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby also a target, according to Sport1.

With Mason Greenwood out of the picture, United requires a right-sided winger. Facundo Pellistri and Amad are both prospects, but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to contribute next season.

Otavio, 27, would be a great stopgap without jeopardizing either of their long-term prospects.

After Otavio’s international debut, Portugal manager Fernando Santos told Mais Futebol: “Otávio was part of a group of players that were on the field who, in my opinion, was very good for 30 minutes.” Excellent.”

“He’s been training hard, and if we brought him up, it’s because we believe he’s good.”

Last year, Portuguese journalist Nuno Encarnaço told Record, “He is special and different from anything Fernando Santos has at his disposal.”
