The midfielder for Borussia Dortmund is one of the world’s brightest prospects. As a result, a slew of Europe’s top clubs is interested in signing Bellingham.

However, with Dortmund under no financial pressure to sell, it is expected to be a hard battle. Rooney, who now manages DC United in Major League Soccer, remains a close observer of happenings at Old Trafford. And he’d want to see the 19-year-old join United.

On talkSPORT, the former England captain was asked if United should target Bellingham in the summer, to which he replied: “I really hope so! I’m hoping he doesn’t end up at Liverpool or [Manchester] City!

“But I’m sure they’re doing their job since he’s the hottest youth in international football right now. I’m sure United is considering it as well; I know they tried to sign him a few years ago, so I’d hope so. He’s a player who United could definitely use right now.”

Rooney holds high regard for Bellingham, having played against him at different stages of their careers.

He continued: “When he was at Birmingham and I was at Derby, I played against Bellingham. And he actually man-marked me during the game; I believe he was 16 or 17, and what I liked about him was that every time I passed the ball off, he’d leave a stud in on me.

“And I recall thinking to myself, ‘he’s got something about him.’ Even though he’s young, I believe he can instill some of that spirit in some of the rest of the squad.”
