Manchester United boss has to make big decision on returning star against Arsenal

Eric Bailly of Manchester United will be hoping for a second consecutive Premier League start after his excellent performance against Chelsea.

Due to our club captain Harry Maguire’s suspension following his red card against Watford in what turned out to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s final game in charge, the Ivorian was brought into the lineup.

Maguire, on the other hand, is eligible for selection when Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta’s side visits Old Trafford on Thursday.

Although Ralf Rangnick has been named as Manchester United’s interim manager until the end of the season, it is uncertain whether the German will face Arsenal.

Michael Carrick will once again assume command if the 63-year-old has to wait until Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace for his debut game in charge.

However, now that Maguire has returned from suspension, Rangnick or Carrick are in a pickle.

If Solskjaer were still in command, it would be a foregone conclusion that the former Leicester City midfielder would be reintroduced to the starting lineup right away.

This happened earlier this season in a 4-2 loss at Leicester when Maguire was selected over Bailly to play with Victor Lindelof despite being obviously off the pace.

Maguire’s performances since returning from an amazing European Championship do not deserve an immediate recall, there is no denying that.

Bailly and Lindelof fought valiantly against the league leaders, and they certainly deserve the chance to improve on their great performance.

Rangnick, who is known for his aggressive, energetic style of play, has the potential to make a statement right away, emphasizing that no player would be selected based on their reputation or transfer fee.

With Raphael Varane on the mend, it’ll be intriguing to see who becomes the German’s preferred center-back pairing.

Varane and Bailly, for example, are a combo we have yet to witness this season.

But, with the Gunners on the horizon, it’s difficult to see how Maguire deserves to return to the team right away.

On Thursday night, the world’s most expensive defender (£80m BBC Sport) could find himself on the bench.
