Ten Hag’s move that diverged from the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson’s philosophy involved securing one of Manchester United’s deadline day transfers.

On that day, the Red Devils welcomed Altay Bayindir, Sergio Reguilon, and Sofyan Amrabat to the squad, with Jonny Evans also inking a short-term deal. The decision to bring in Reguilon came on the heels of injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

As Brandon Williams and Alex Telles departed Old Trafford, with Williams on loan to Ipswich Town and Telles joining Al-Nassr, Ten Hag was determined to fill the left-back vacancy. Thus, Reguilon, a left-back on a season-long loan from Tottenham, was enlisted.

An alternative option, Alvaro Fernandez, had spent the previous season on loan at Championship club Preston, where he earned the Young Player of the Year accolade and raised hopes of a more prominent role at United. The Athletic reported that club executives suggested him as a contender to challenge Diogo Dalot for the left-back position. Although Fernandez had been on the verge of a loan move to Granada, it was postponed following Shaw’s injury.

While Fernandez’s name was floated, Ten Hag insisted on recruiting a player with Premier League experience. This led to United compiling a shortlist of emergency options, with Marc Cucurella emerging as their preferred choice.

However, various complications thwarted United’s pursuit of the Chelsea player, including the Blues’ loan fee valuation and Cucurella’s participation in the Carabao Cup victory over AFC Wimbledon.

Ultimately, Reguilon was signed, with United covering his £115,000 per week wages entirely. Nonetheless, this signing contravenes Ferguson’s belief in promoting and providing opportunities to young talent—a fundamental principle that has historically defined Manchester United.

In 2015, Ferguson stated, “That would apply to almost every club apart from Manchester United because, to be honest with you, in the history of Manchester United from Matt Busby’s days to my time, that has to really be a foundation of the club; it has to be the strongest point.” He added, “Man United supporters want to see the young players coming through. So I think in other circumstances you are correct but, for Manchester United, they will always be very strong in bringing young players through.”

Fernandez eventually secured his loan move to Granada, finalizing the deal late on transfer deadline day. He is set to spend the entire season with the La Liga side, following a recent appearance on the substitutes’ bench during United’s victory over Nottingham Forest.
