Manchester United is poised to terminate Charlie McNeill’s loan deal with Stevenage in January, citing dissatisfaction with the young striker’s limited game time.

Erik ten Hag, grappling with an injury crisis, is reportedly recalling the academy graduate to reassess his options.

McNeill, a promising talent, was loaned to League One side Stevenage for the season to secure regular first-team experience.

Despite making a debut goal against Leyton Orient, the 20-year-old struggled to secure a consistent spot in Steve Evans’ lineup, making only three appearances since August.

United, unimpressed with the insufficient playing opportunities McNeill has received, is exercising the six-month break clause in his loan contract.

The club envisions redirecting the striker to another potential move in the upcoming transfer window, aiming for a more fruitful stint.

Having joined United from rivals Manchester City in 2020 for a £750,000 fee, McNeill showcased his prowess at the Under-18s level, tallying an impressive 24 goals in 20 games during his debut season.

His ascent continued in the 2022-23 season, earning a promotion to the development squad.

While McNeill shone with three goals in five appearances in the EFL Trophy, his Premier League 2 journey proved challenging, with one goal in 12 games in the U21 league.

United, keen on nurturing his growth, now looks to recalibrate his loan trajectory for a more beneficial stint, exploring potential interest from League One and League Two clubs in January.
