Real Madrid’s most experienced players came to the party as they overcame a strong battle from Chelsea to go to the Champions League semi-finals with a 5-4 aggregate win over the two legs played. While Karim Benzema scored a late winner to secure his team’s position in the final four, midfielder Luka Modric wasn’t far behind, as he expertly assisted Rodrygo for his team’s first goal of the night. After falling behind 1-3 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea established a dominant 3-0 lead and appeared to be well on their way to a semi-finals spot. However, Rodrygo’s inch-perfect finish to Modric’s brilliant pass allowed Real Madrid to force extra time, where Benzema sealed victory in the 96th minute.

On a night when Chelsea’s players controlled play, Modric delivered a moment of brilliance in the game’s 80th minute. On the inside of the left flank, the playmaker received a pass from Marcelo and produced a wonderful pass with the outside of his foot that landed on the far side of the goal post. The ball was well-received by Rodrygo, who had little trouble burying it inside the net.

The goal provided some solace to the home team as the game was forced to be decided in extra time.

In terms of the total statistics of the game, Chelsea clearly dominated the figures. The visitors controlled the ball for 57% of the time and tried 7 attempts on goal, three more than Madrid did at home.

With over 150 more passes and nine more corners, defending champions Chelsea appeared to be on a mission, but Benzema’s late strike sealed their destiny.
