In the seventh minute of the match, Manchester United’s goal against Fulham was disallowed due to an offside decision involving Harry Maguire. Maguire, who was in an offside position, was deemed to be interfering with play.

Scott McTominay had initially thought he’d opened the scoring at Craven Cottage on Saturday by tapping the ball into the net.

However, the goal underwent a thorough review by the VAR official, who spotted that Maguire was offside when Christian Eriksen delivered a free kick into the box.

Maguire’s presence effectively prevented Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz from reaching Alejandro Garnacho, who was on the receiving end of Eriksen’s delivery.

This enabled Garnacho to deliver the ball across the face of the goal, ultimately allowing McTominay to score what appeared to be the easiest of goals. However, the plot thickened.

A protracted review followed McTominay’s goal, as referee John Brooks made his way to the pitch-side monitor to determine whether Maguire’s interference was significant.

Brooks ultimately agreed with the VAR official’s decision and disallowed the goal, much to the relief of Fulham.

The decision prompted mixed reactions among BBC Radio 5 Live’s commentary team.

Everton legend Leon Osman offered his perspective, stating, “Is Harry Maguire’s interference substantial enough to rule it as offside?

In my view, he is interfering, but Conor Coady’s view differs. This illustrates the subjectivity of such decisions.”

On social media, some fans criticized the decision as “ridiculous” and a “joke,” while others argued that it did not meet the criteria for being a “clear and obvious” incident.

Nonetheless, some supporters commended Brooks for ultimately making the right call, highlighting Maguire’s involvement.

Jermaine Jenas, part of TNT Sports’ commentary team for the game, shared his insights.

The former Tottenham midfielder remarked, “Initially, it seemed onside, but Maguire does appear to attempt to make contact with the ball, which would render it offside.”

Rio Ferdinand chimed in, saying, “The on-field decision is essentially passing the buck to VAR, isn’t it? In the end, it’s the right call, and Harry Maguire did influence the defender’s decision and his position as well, perhaps.”

The VAR decision proved to be a significant reprieve for Fulham.

Former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith commented on BBC Radio 5 Live, saying, “Fulham will be disappointed with that.

It was a routine free kick, and United capitalized with an overload at the far post. McTominay has been in good scoring form recently.”
