Van Gaal, who was in command at Old Trafford from 2014 to 2016, advised the current Ajax manager to think carefully about his options after becoming one of the main candidates to replace caretaker Ralf Rangnick in the summer.

“Erik Ten Hag is a wonderful coach, which is always helpful for Manchester United,” Van Gaal said ahead of Holland’s friendly against Germany.

“However, Manchester United is a commercial club, so selecting a coach is difficult.” He should join a football club.

“I’m not going to advise him; he’ll contact me on his own.” But he must select a football club rather than a commercial club.”

Rangnick took over as interim manager in November after the sacking of 1999 treble winner Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after nearly three years in command.

United aims to hire his permanent replacement before the summer and wants to chat with a number of candidates, including Ten Hag, who is said to have visited with the Premier League club last week as part of that process.

Former Tottenham and current Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino, Spain’s Luis Enrique, and Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui have all been connected with the vacant position.
