Who is Mitchell van der Gaag? The coach who could be joining Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

The current Ajax manager was interviewed for the permanent position at Old Trafford last month and was identified by the United leadership as the ideal contender for the job. With his present club in Amsterdam anticipating him to go, the focus has shifted to who will be joining Ten Hag in Manchester.

Ten Hag is said to be interested in bringing in Mitchell van der Gaag if the 52-year-old is appointed manager at Old Trafford. MEN Sport has investigated Van der Gaag’s identity.

Who exactly is Mitchell van der Gaag?
Van der Gaag began his football career in the academy of PSV Eindhoven. He spent the majority of his playing career in the Netherlands as a defender.

The Dutchman did play for Motherwell for two seasons, assisting them to survive with seven goals in 28 games, but that was his sole experience with British football. Van der Gaag concluded his playing career in Maritimo in Portugal, where he also began coaching.

After stints at Belenenses and Ermis Aradippou, he took over as manager of PSV’s city rivals FC Eindhoven in 2015. He performed admirably there before moving on to Excelsior Rotterdam and later NAC Breda.

His association with Ajax began in 2019 when he was appointed as their U21 manager. Ten Hag promoted Van der Gaag to assistant manager of the Amsterdam club’s first team last summer.

As previously stated, Van der Gaag is Ten Hag’s current assistant at Ajax. He has been in the position since 2021 and has done well as the 52-year-right-hand old’s man.

Van der Gaag explained how he intended his U21 team to perform at Ajax: “We want to dominate for longer portions of the game and be dominating.” We must continually focus on the field occupation, deep runs, and the occupation in front of the goal.

“The players like to have the ball at their feet, so we have to pay attention and impose there all the time.”
