Ten Hag explained the decision to substitute Casemiro, stating, ‘I wanted more football—someone who could provide passing, distribution, and link-up play. So, I thought of bringing Christian Eriksen for Casemiro.’

A dramatic comeback victory unfolded for United as substitute Scott McTominay scored in the 93rd and 97th minute, preventing a third successive defeat at Old Trafford.

The victory boosted United into the top half of the Premier League table, with four wins and four losses from their first eight games.

Despite the jubilant scenes at full-time, ten Hag still had concerns about certain aspects of the performance and issued a stern warning to the United players.

He emphasized that they cannot afford to be ‘eaten’ by hungrier opponents, as they were earlier in the season.

“Those matches provide motivation in the dressing room,” stressed ten Hag. “Players understand the effort required to achieve results, and it can’t be taken lightly.

In football, it’s a survival of the fittest. Too often in the first half of the season, we were outplayed by opponents with more hunger, and that’s unacceptable. It needs to change.”

Ten Hag also criticized unnamed players for their decision-making leading up to Mathias Jensen’s opening goal.

Harry Maguire played a free-kick to Casemiro in United’s third, but the pass was intercepted, leading to Jensen’s goal.

“We controlled the game without creating many chances and needed more attacks in the box,” noted Ten Hag.

“However, we managed to control their counters effectively, and we didn’t allow them counter-attacks. We had some opportunities, but unfortunately, we conceded a goal due to the wrong decision by two or three players.

“We have to recognize the need for leadership in decisive moments. Avoidable mistakes must be eliminated from our game if we want success.

This team has character, belief, and togetherness, which can serve as a foundation to build on, but it’s up to us to raise our game and handle pressure effectively.”
