The Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge against the 21-year-old Manchester United striker after he was arrested today on suspicion of breaching bail conditions.

Janet Potter, Assistant Chief Crown Prosecutor at the North West Crown Prosecution Service, said: ‘The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge 21-year-old Mason Greenwood with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

All three charges relate to the same complainant.

Rape prosecutors in the North West CPS Complex Case Unit authorised the charges after reviewing a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.

Greenwood is due to make his first appearance at Greater Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday 17 October, the CPS added.

The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that the criminal proceedings against the defendant are ongoing and that he is entitled to a fair trial.

It is extremely important that you do not report, comment or share information online that could prejudice these proceedings in any way,” they said.

The decision comes after the footballer was arrested in January after images and videos were posted on the internet.

Greenwood is alleged to have breached his bail conditions after contacting his alleged victim.

He is accused of raping, sexually assaulting and threatening to kill a student who was 18 at the time.

Greenwood is being questioned after officers visited his £15,000-a-month home in Bowden, Manchester, this morning, reports The Sun.

The football star’s bail was extended at a private hearing at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court in June.

He was then questioned on suspicion of making death threats and spent three nights in cells at Greater Manchester Police Station.

Greenwood was released on conditional bail on 2 February, which has since been extended twice.

However, police have not said when it will run out after a closed court hearing in June.

The striker last appeared for Manchester United on 22 January.

The club was forced to issue a statement saying it “does not tolerate any form of violence”.

United suspended Greenwood after police launched their investigation, but he continues to receive his £75,000-a-week salary.

A GMP spokesman said: ‘Greater Manchester Police are aware of an allegation that a 21-year-old man breached bail conditions and an arrest was made on Saturday 15 October 2022.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.”
