The Manchester Evening News revealed on Monday that Birmingham are interested in signing the Dutch winger and talks are progressing well for his departure before Thursday’s deadline.

Chong, 22, has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and was deemed surplus to requirements after Erik ten Hag gave him a chance in pre-season.

The United academy graduate will join team-mate Hannibal Mejbri at the Championship club after the Tunisian completed his loan spell at Birmingham last weekend.

United have a good relationship with the Midlands club, having loaned youngsters Teden Mengi and Chong to St Andrew’s last season. Chong scored one goal and provided two assists in 16 appearances for the Blues, although his season was interrupted by a four-month lay-off due to groin surgery.

The youngster joined United from Feyenoord’s academy in 2016 and made his debut against Reading in the FA Cup third round in January 2019. He has not played competitively for United since the Europa League round of 16 second leg against LASK in August 2020.

The club are also open to a number of young players leaving on loan on deadline day as they look to secure regular football for a number of players who have progressed beyond the academy.

Northern Irish midfielder Ethan Galbraith is attracting interest from English and Scottish clubs, and the club remain interested in the loan of Shola Shoretire.

Teden Mengi and Dishon Bernard were due to go out on loan this summer before getting injured, and defender Will Fish was promised a loan when he signed a new contract in July.

United had planned to take Matej Kovar and Nathan Bishop on loan, but there is a chance both will stay.
