According to ex-England great John Barnes, Jesse Lingard should leave Manchester United in the summer and resurrect his career at former loan club West Ham.

Lingard has only started two games for United this season and sought a loan move away from Old Trafford during the January transfer window.

Lingard remains in Manchester despite interest from the Hammers, Newcastle United, and Everton, with the Premier League giants thwarting his attempts to move.

Lingard’s contract is up in the summer, therefore he’ll be looking for a new club, and Liverpool veteran Barnes believes a return to West Ham is the ‘natural option.’

Lingard found a home at the London Stadium last season, scoring nine goals and providing five assists during his loan spell in east London.

Barnes told BonusCodeBets, ‘Lingard would have been a terrific signing for Newcastle, but he hasn’t gone, so they have to forget about it.’ ‘I’m not sure what Lingard’s future holds.

‘I don’t think it’ll be at Manchester United because it hasn’t worked there, despite how well he performed at West Ham.’ United aren’t going to rely on Lingard with the personnel they have.

Lingard made an impression at the London Stadium last season for Manchester United.

‘Given how well Lingard performed at West Ham, it would seem natural for him to move there. At the conclusion of the season, he’ll have to make a significant decision.’

Given Lingard’s limited playing time this season, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was taken aback when his former club refused to let him leave in January.

‘If I were that player, I wouldn’t be happy.’ Ferdinand remarked on his FIVE YouTube channel, “It’s almost like he’s lost a whole year of his career, a whole season of his career.”

‘He hasn’t been in many games and hasn’t been involved in any. He went to West Ham and did so brilliantly that no one would want to sign him outside of the top four – and then he returns to Man United and doesn’t play.

‘I was really perplexed as to why he returned to Man United in the first place after having tasted success and playing every week.’

‘Either he was promised greater game time by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, or I’m not sure what it was.’ Then there’s this window, where you’d think he’d be trying everything he can to escape out.

‘Perhaps he waited too long to reach the point where he wanted to go.’ Did he ask to leave at the start of the window, or did he decide later in the window that he wanted to leave, and then other circumstances snatched it away from him? I’m not sure.

‘However, when you look at his career, I believe the last year or two have been wasted by him being at Man United when he’ll never play a game.’ It’s completely insane.’
