According to The Athletic, Arnold – to whom the Glazers have delegated final authority – had planned an announcement confirming Greenwood’s return for Friday, August 4th.

However, in the days leading up to the announcement, United were keen to alert important stakeholders like as the women’s squad, sponsors, and the fan advisory board.

And the club’s female players, three of whom are in Australia practicing for the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, were a big role in the postponement.

Since then, United has stressed that no final decision has been taken and has faced widespread criticism over stories of Greenwood’s imminent readmission.

In response, The Athletic report crisis talks involving United executives took place on Thursday and Friday, with some club workers apprehensive about a return.

There has even been talk of a sense of’shame’ among United staff, with some considering retiring as a result of the affair.

Fans have also made their feelings heard, sending emails to Arnold expressing their disapproval of Greenwood’s return.

United has responded to many, stating that they are ‘very attentive’ of supporters’ sentiments but ‘also believe that the judgment in this case should be based primarily on the investigation’s findings.

According to the report, it is unclear whether the outpouring of emotion on social media would influence United’s decision.

Staff are now expecting an announcement on the future of the 21-year-old forward before the end of August.

Greenwood hasn’t played for United or trained with the club since his arrest in January 2022, when a recording and photographs of an alleged sexual assault surfaced online.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm in October of that year. He refuted all of the accusations.

The Crown Prosecution Service withdrew all charges in February of this year because ‘a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and additional material meant there was no longer a realistic possibility of conviction’.

United confirmed on February 2 that an internal probe into Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford had commenced.

That procedure is now complete, leaving just confirmation behind closed doors and an announcement.
