David De Gea, the former Manchester United and Spain goalkeeper, remains without a club this summer as he struggles to secure a move.

Despite initial rumors suggesting that Real Betis might be considering a move for De Gea, the club has since clarified that they are not interested in his services. This decision may not come as a shock, considering Betis already boasts two top-notch goalkeepers in the form of the highly-rated Rui Silva and the vastly experienced Claudio Bravo.

While Bravo is currently recovering from injury and Silva is sidelined for four weeks, both are expected to return to full fitness after the next international break, leaving no room for a third senior goalkeeper in the squad.

What’s perhaps more surprising than Betis passing on De Gea is the apparent lack of interest from other clubs, despite the fact that he is available as a free agent. At 32 years old, De Gea should not be considered past his prime, especially when compared to Silva and Bravo, aged 29 and 40, respectively. Goalkeepers tend to peak later in their careers and often continue playing at a high level into their later years.

De Gea’s predicament can be attributed to a couple of factors. Firstly, the goalkeeping market is currently flooded with talent, particularly among the clubs he wishes to join after his 12-year stint at Manchester United.

Secondly, many coaches view him as a shot-stopper who has not developed other aspects of his game, such as adeptly playing as a sweeper-keeper or helping his defenders build play from a high-press situation.

His inability to secure a dream move to Real Madrid underscores the impact of these factors. When Thibaut Courtois suffered a cruciate knee injury at the start of the season, Real Madrid needed a swift and quality replacement. De Gea’s name initially emerged as a potential candidate. However, it soon became evident that while he was a popular topic on social media, he wasn’t seriously being considered by Real Madrid.

Instead, Real Madrid’s attention turned to Yassine ‘Bono’ Bonnou, the Moroccan national team’s No. 1 goalkeeper, who plied his trade with Sevilla. Real Madrid eventually pursued a £17 million deal for Bono due to his availability and the immediate need for a replacement.

In the end, Bono did not complete the move to Real Madrid, opting instead for a transfer to Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League for £18 million. Saudi Arabia could be a potential destination for De Gea, but his preference to return to Spain, where he resides with his Spanish wife, Edurne Garcia, will remain a consideration after exploring all other possibilities.
