For some, Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford last summer felt like a masterstroke, given that he brought goals with him. Manchester United were quickly regarded title contenders, with some speculating that the Portuguese forward may be invaluable in the UEFA Champions League.

Unfortunately, neither of those scenarios occurred, and as the team’s star, Ronaldo bears a large portion of the guilt for the team’s loss. Chelsea made a similar move by re-signing Romelu Lukaku, who had not fit into Thomas Tuchel’s system. And the Belgian’s mistakes show a serious lack of research prior to committing a club-record sum.

Clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City have ceased signing players based only on their reputations and prior accomplishments. Instead, data plays a significant part in choosing a professional who meets the manager’s requirements, even when transferring a squad player.

Arsenal has joined this bandwagon after a string of costly errors following Arsene Wenger’s departure. The Frenchman was very particular about his targets and only signed players that fit his system. The Gunners have a similar manager with a fantastic talent ID in Mikel Arteta, who also happened to recruit Willian in the past.

Last summer, Arteta demonstrated his true worth by bringing in players who did not initially click with Arsenal fans. Consider the case of Ben White, whose signing resulted in Arsenal being chastised for the £50 million fee and the defender’s lack of Premier League experience. The comparison with Raphael Varane, a four-time Champions League winner who cost less, was a frequently used argument.

Alternatively, after suffering back-to-back relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield United, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale signed for large money. Both players have contributed significantly to Arsenal’s rise to the top four. They are in charge of the gang that is out to prove Arteta’s talent spotting is more than simply a stroke of luck.

Arteta begins the most important transfer window of his managerial career after a great start to his squad overhaul. Arsenal needs a quality striker, and this is one area where he cannot afford to fail. The correct player must come in, score goals, and fit into the system devised by the Premier League’s youngest manager.

What exactly is an Arsenal-type striker?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has the ability to score a lot of goals, and when he was on form, the club prospered. Alexandre Lacazette, while perhaps not as productive as Aubameyang, gets others into the game and sets the tone for flowing offensive plays. However, his lack of productivity reveals the Frenchman’s issues in the box, as he frequently misses wonderful opportunities created for him.

Arteta is looking for a muscular, prolific striker who will fit into the system seamlessly. The January chase of Dusan Vlahovic highlighted what the manager was looking for, and while the Serb will not be a target, a number of players come close to his quality.

Arsenal’s preferred strikers are most likely a limited group of talented individuals. Alexander Isak, Jonathan David, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tammy Abraham, Victor Osimhen, and Darwin Nunez may all be scribbled down on a new piece of paper labeled ‘priority shortlist.’

Other options rumored are Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney, and Luka Jovic, however, Arteta is likely to go in a different way. So, from the small pool of strikers, let’s take a look at three potential significant targets for the Gunners next season.

Erling Haaland would be a terrific addition for Arsenal, given the club’s need for a striker, the club’s good, young project, and the team’s competitiveness. However, the Norwegian international will not be joining Arsenal, and the next best choices after the Borussia Dortmund man are likely to be Darwin Nunez and Victor Osimhen.

Continuing with Nunez, Arsenal has already begun conversations with the player’s representation about a summer deal. The 22-year-old Uruguayan international adds physicality, athleticism, and final output, all of which are lacking in Arsenal’s current strikers.

Without focusing too much on his traits, Nunez has the potential to become a fantastic focal point for the attack by utilizing his abilities to pull in wide attackers. The Uruguayan is a strong worker who, like Lacazette, prefers to track back and engage in confrontations with defenders and midfielders.

Nunez has 26 goals and two assists in 33 games this season, which equates to a contribution every 83 minutes. These are the figures that elite clubs look for in a striker. However, the Premier League is not the same as the Portuguese league, yet there is a player here who has the potential to become a world-beater and excel at Arsenal.

However, the Gunners will face interest from many rivals, notably Manchester United, to sign him, creating a fascinating transfer battle for his talents.

Napoli, €100 million for Victor Osimhen

Arsenal fans on Twitter are already putting together video compilations of Osimhen’s physical rushes into the box as well as his goals. Those films highlight how brilliant the Nigerian striker is, and why Napoli may have been right to invest so much in him when he was unknown and cost so much money.

Osimhen is a big specimen of a striker who likes to impose his strength on defenders when pushing for the ball. The Napoli forward’s appearances have been reduced this season owing to injury and involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations, but he has still managed to put up impressive figures. In 25 games, he has 15 goals in all competitions. This term also includes four assists to his name.

While Arteta would want to see the 23-year-old lead the line for Arsenal, his price tag may be prohibitive. Napoli invested around €75 million in 2020 and will undoubtedly demand a large profit if he is transferred. To ward off interest, a price tag of €100 million has already been sounded out to prospective suitors, which include Manchester United once again.

Arsenal, on the other hand, may try to approach and be inventive with their offer. While there have been no rumors to the contrary, the Gunners could deploy Nicolas Pepe as a makeweight to cut the price tag. Although Arteta would love to have the Nigerian on his team, these are lofty expectations.

Gianluca Scamacca: €30 million for Sassuolo

Tammy Abraham would have been the ideal pick, but he may not be eager to return to the Premier League so quickly. Furthermore, given how well-known he has become since joining AS Roma, he will be expensive. Gianluca Scamacca is a realistic possibility for Arsenal if they are unable to entice Nunez or Osimhen.

Onlookers will judge the 6’4 striker as being lanky and will question his mobility. Surprisingly, for his height, Scamacca is a tremendously dynamic and athletic striker. The Italian international has exceptional hold-up playability and enjoys bulldozing through defenders.

His scoring statistics are intriguing, as he has 13 goals in 28 Serie A appearances. Sciacca is coming to the fore after a sluggish start to the season, scoring often, especially while starting games for Sassuolo. Furthermore, the Italian is a superb presser, which Arteta is looking for in his new striker.

Scamacca’s career stats are comparable to those of January target Vlahovic, and he has similar trends to the Serb. In addition, Fiorentina had the Sassuolo striker in mind to replace the new Juventus striker, but the deal fell through. Arsenal could make an approach, but they may need to keep a closer eye on him before making a decision.

Arsenal has a plethora, if not an abundance, of alternatives to pick from. Arteta is expected to sign one big player in the transfer season to improve his team, and he is likely to keep Alexandre Lacazette on a short-term agreement. The new striker, who is likely to be a kid, cannot be expected to lead the line from the start and maybe gradually absorbed over the course of a season.

As a result, the club may maintain Lacazette, and Nunez is the most likely name among the choices listed above. The Uruguayan international, 22, appears to be a good match for Arsenal and possesses the physical attributes that the boss liked in Dusan Vlahovic. His game is not one-dimensional, as he also plays from the left.

Nunez meets Arteta’s major objective of scoring goals on a regular basis. Signing him will help Arsenal to cut the gap on their opponents, as the Spanish manager develops a club that is determined to win the Premier League at whatever cost, and one that requires a striker of the quality of the Benfica man.
