Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has disclosed details of his conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo before the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Ronaldo, who came off the bench to start United’s first win of the season, approached Neville and fellow former United teammate Roy Keane before kick-off. Neville and Keane were part of Sky Sports’ punditry crew for the televised match, delivering pre-match analysis pitchside.

Ronaldo, who was still doing his pre-match warm-up, ran across to the side of the pitch and had a lengthy talk with the pair after noticing them. The 37-year-meeting old’s with Keane was recorded by Sky’s microphones, but Neville’s conversation with the striker was not.

With the former Real Madrid man’s future still up in the air, the details of their quick catch-up had some wondering what they may have been discussing. He wants to leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes next week because he still wants to play in the Champions League.

Neville, on the other hand, has revealed that their brief conversation was nothing more than a catch-up between two former teammates. He was motivated to expose the contents of the conversation by passionate Ronaldo supporter Piers Morgan, who tweeted in response to a video of Ronaldo approaching Neville: “I imagine he wasn’t expressing emotional gratitude to Mr. Neville for his recent insights either… “Would you mind telling us what he said to you?”

“He [Ronaldo] said ‘Are you good?'” Neville answered Morgan’s tweet. ‘Yes, are you all right?’ I said. ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘All the best,’ I said.

“Did you anticipate something different, Piers?”

Ronaldo, who has started just one of United’s first three Premier League games this season, came off the bench late in the game to replace Marcus Rashford, who scored United’s second goal. The Portugal international was one of four players left out of boss Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup for the 4-0 loss at Brentford.
