Erik ten Hag believes the 21-year-old is ideally suited to the right-back position as the manager looks to bring another Dutch star to Old Trafford.

However, the Red Devils will face stiff competition from a number of clubs, with even Chelsea considering a swoop in the transfer market.

Frimpong has not received any official approach from any club and is currently focused solely on selection for the upcoming World Cup, but his team are aware of the interest in him.

Bayer have managed to hold on to their star players over the summer, with Newcastle enquiring about Moussa Diaby, who opted to stay, and Patrik Schick signing a new long-term contract, but their slow start to the season means that qualification for any European competition is a distant prospect and they may have to part with some of their most ambitious players.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is another man destined to leave when a suitable buyer arrives, a player who, despite having transformed his physique over the summer, will be transferred as Ten Hag look to strengthen the squad with players who fit their plan for the future.

While it is suggested that the Glazers are unwilling to spend in this January window, it is thought that the prospect of the club losing their key targets and failing to appease their manager would lead to disaster.

Chelsea’s interest in Frimpong could therefore prompt United to push for a swift transfer.
