Not Sancho or Rashford – Manchester United have next Zlatan Ibrahimovic confirmed in Brentford win

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal as Manchester United defeated Brentford 1-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Manchester United defeated Brentford 1-0 on Wednesday night to avenge their weekend loss to Newcastle. Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game for Manchester United, improving their chances of finishing in the top four. It also means that the England international has now surpassed Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s club record of 28 goals in a single season.

Manchester United went into the game against Brentford hoping to get back on track.

On Sunday, they were terrible against Newcastle, losing 2-0 thanks to strikes from Toon duo Joe Willock and Callum Wilson.

But United responded well to defeat Brentford, with Rashford being the hero of the hour for Erik ten Hag’s side.

The England international, who hadn’t scored in the Premier League since the Carabao Cup final at the end of February, scored in the 27th minute to put the game to bed.

Express Sport looks at four things we discovered.

Rashford is similar to Ibrahimovic.

Rashford has been United’s finest performer this season, rebounding from last season’s struggles under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

And the England international has now surpassed Ibrahimovic’s total of 28 goals in all competitions.

The Swede achieved the same thing in the 2016/2017 season, pushing the club to EFL Cup and Europa League triumph.

Bruno Fernandes achieved the same amount in the 2020/2021 campaign.

Rashford nailed his goal from close range after Marcel Sabitzer won a header inside the box.

United would be better off without Weghorst.
Prior to this evening, Wout Weghorst had started every game for United since his January arrival.

Ten Hag dropped the Netherlands international to the bench as a result of his poor performance against Newcastle.

United looked significantly more fluid without Weghorst.

Rashford was, of course, the greatest player in a red shirt, with his goal finishing off a strong performance.

However, Antony and Jadon Sancho shone in attack, and it will be intriguing to see if Ten Hag remains with this front three in the future.

Sabitzer’s new job pays off

Sabitzer had a sitter against Newcastle on Sunday, with Scott McTominay playing further ahead.

Ten Hag chose to switch roles for the match against Brentford.

It was a decision that also paid off.

Sabitzer enjoys getting forward, and his assist for Rashford was excellent, with the Austria international demonstrating his strength in the air.

McTominay seems a lot more at ease in his role, although United is still waiting down the days until Casemiro returns from injury. A particularly impressive block in the second half.
