United defeated Newcastle 2-0 on Sunday to earn their first title in six years and the first under Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Casemiro opened the score before Rashford doubled their lead, but it was ruled an own goal by Sven Botman when his shot rebounded off the Dutchman and looped over Loris Karius.

On Sky Sports, Roy Keane informed Marcus Rashford that the goal would not be his, but the forward stated that he would still claim it.

To commemorate the goal, the forward tweeted: “A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In a cup final, scoring for your favorite club. That is one for the fans.”

United has since verified that the English Football League (EFL) changed its judgment and that the goal has now been awarded to the England international. According to a statement on the club’s website:

“Manchester United can confirm that Marcus Rashford scored the second goal in the Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle United.

“The club has obtained confirmation that Rashford is really the goalscorer since his shot was considered on target by the multiple Wembley match referees.”

The confirmation that the goal belongs to Rashford is his 25th in all competitions this season.

After the game, Rashford told Sky Sports that winning their first trophy under Ten Hag had fueled his desire to go on and win more.

“It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, but being engaged in these types of games is huge for us and something we’ve missed as a club. Hopefully, it will motivate us to keep going “He stated.

“The desire is for more times like these. I’ve been in finals where we’ve won and lost, and when you win, it’s huge for the club and as individuals, and it’s part of our and the club’s history, which we want to contribute to.

“We want to play a lot of games, which includes staying in all of the competitions we’re in. I’m overjoyed with the outcome.”
