According to ESPN, the former Ajax coach is inheriting a mess in Manchester, with sources characterizing the environment in the dressing room as “poison” during the second part of the season, with cliques forming and mistrust brewing among the players.

One of the points of contention was Maguire’s status as captain, which many Manchester United fans believe the Englishman should not have.

According to ESPN, the team was split on whether Maguire should keep the armband at some time throughout the season. David De Gea, Bruno Fernandes, and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the options to take over if a change occurs next season, and this is just one of the many decisions Ten Hag will have to make.

To make matters worse for Maguire, sources have told ESPN that the center-back, who has been a regular since joining Leicester City in 2019, is not even certain to start under the new manager due to his lack of pace and Ten Hag’s preference for a high defensive line.

According to reports, Manchester United is interested in Villarreal’s Pau Torres, a left-footed left-sided center-back. According to Villarreal’s local publication Deportes de Periodico Mediterraneo, the Spaniard’s agents will travel to Manchester this week to negotiate a deal with United – assuming an agreement on a fee can be reached with Villarreal.

Maguire could either spend the season in a rotation position or be transferred to raise funds for additional transfers. This would be excellent news for Manchester United fans, who have shown their displeasure with the 29-year-old multiple times this season, but many would also like to see the Englishman achieve his peak under the new manager.
