During his tenure as Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson oversaw some great world-beaters.

As a result, naming the best XI has always been a challenge for Scot, no matter how many times he’s been asked. There are some obvious names that must be included, but limiting it to just eleven will always divide opinion.

Ferguson explained in his 2013 autobiography: “You couldn’t leave [Paul] Scholes out, and you couldn’t leave Bryan Robson out. They would both provide you with at least ten goals per season. But then there’s the question of how you can leave out [Roy] Keane.

“You’d have to take on all three of them. But who do you play with [Eric] Cantona, who was always better when paired with another forward?

“Pick one striker from the squads of [Brian] McClair, [Mark] Hughes, [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer, [Ruud] van Nistelrooy, [Teddy] Sheringham, [Dwight] Yorke, [Andy] Cole, [Wayne] Rooney, and [Robin] van Persie. You couldn’t overlook [Ryan] Giggs.”

After concluding that the task is nearly impossible, Ferguson reached a compromise by choosing five players who, in his opinion, should never be left out of a United XI.

“So it always felt like an impossible challenge to select a top XI,” he said, “but you would have to argue Cantona, Giggs, Scholes, Robson, and Cristiano Ronaldo could never be left out of a Manchester United team.”

Of course, Cantona, Giggs, Scholes, and Robson’s careers are all over. However, Ronaldo is still quite active at Manchester United and is entering what could be his final season with the club.

Ronaldo’s summer has been turbulent to say the least, with the Portuguese international announcing his desire to join a team competing in the Champions League this season.

The 37-year-old hasn’t gotten his way, and according to sources, Erik ten Hag is aiming to leave Ronaldo out of his starting XI when the new season begins this weekend – a clear mistake in Ferguson’s view.

According to The Sun, Ronaldo, who missed United’s pre-season tour, will start the season on the bench while he gets up to speed, with Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford leading the line for the Red Devils.
