Cristiano Ronaldo is taken aback when Manchester United offers him an alternate transfer exit option.

Manchester United have been insistent that Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale – but they may potentially make an exception to ensure he can participate in the Champions League before returning to the club next summer.

Manchester United is willing to let Cristiano Ronaldo leave on loan this summer.

In exchange, they want the 37-year-old great to exercise a one-year option to EXTEND his contract, allowing him to return to Old Trafford for a final hurrah, ideally in the Champions League, next summer.

Ronaldo requested to leave this summer in order to play Champions League football next season, and he has yet to return to training after being allowed time off for personal and family reasons.

However, it is understood that in recent negotiations with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, United encouraged Ronaldo to consider taking up the one-year option that was open to both parties and part of his agreement when he arrived from Juventus in a £12.9 million move a year ago.

United would then sanction a one-year loan to a European Champions League team, with Atletico Madrid interested in the Portuguese goal machine.

Ronaldo would then return to Old Trafford next summer to play his final season, with United hoping to compete for a Champions League spot this season.

Senior United officials aren’t expecting a good first year under new Dutch manager Erik ten Hag, but they do hope to battle for a top-four result.

That would provide Ronaldo the opportunity to extend his love affair with Europe’s premier competition with one more season before a final hurrah, potentially in the MLS in America.

It’s a negotiating tactic that’s claimed to have caught Mendes and Ronaldo off guard. However, according to Old Trafford sources, the plan has not yet been rejected.

It would also appease major sponsors such as Team Viewer, who is sad that Ronaldo wants to depart after one season.

Ronaldo is still regarded at the box office in terms of global reach, and United’s slew of sponsors, particularly those with a presence in the Far East, want to maximize their exposure in those countries.

United is said to have received no firm proposals for Ronaldo, who has a current market value of £27 million based on football industry estimations.

This is determined by a variety of elements such as fitness, experience, playing and commercial value, and current performance.

Ronaldo ranks highly in the final criterion after scoring 24 goals in all competitions in a season in which United struggled.

Despite a positive history between the club and the player, United’s public attitude remains that Ronaldo must stay and fulfill his contractual duties.

They admit privately, though, that keeping an unhappy Ronaldo would be difficult and potentially disruptive to ten Hag’s objectives.

After a season marred by divisions, conflicts, and cliques, the former Ajax manager is working hard to restore harmony inside the dressing room.

Early indications are that ten Hag has put a stop to that approach, and senior stars have fully embraced his philosophy and ideas.

Ten Hag returns to Manchester with his squad today (SUNDAY), after United finished their Asia and Australia tour with a 4-0 win against Aston Villa in Perth, having previously beaten Liverpool 4-0, Melbourne Victory 4-1, and Crystal Palace 3-1.

He has another rigorous week of intense physical and tactical practices planned before they fly to Norway on Saturday to face Atletico Madrid at the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo.
