Unai Emery believes Aston Villa paid the price for failing to deal with Manchester United for 15 minutes in the second half of their Carabao Cup match on Thursday night.

United came from behind twice in the second half to defeat Aston Villa 4-2 on Thursday night, with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford canceling out Ollie Watkins’ opening and an own goal from Diogo Dalot before Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay completed the victory.

It was an ideal response from Erik ten Hag’s team after their weekend defeat at Villa Park, and Emery outlined what lost his side the game after the game.

“I am pleased with our performance for 75 minutes; we competed really well, and we were defensively solid in the first half,” he told Sky Sports.

“We need to be more composed on the ball, gain more possession, and break the press.” We were in an excellent spot heading into the second half. We had more options in attack and scored twice, but when they scored quickly, we needed to shut the gaps between our lines and not allow the match to open up.

“They had 15 minutes more in the end than we did.” We have to mentally achieve the excellent moment we had tonight, because our mentality was slipping in the last few minutes. “Our goal is to be consistent.”
