Wayne Rooney believes Mauricio Pochettino will be the next Manchester United manager because of his Premier League experience and track record of developing young players, putting him ahead of Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

Derby manager Rooney feels the incoming manager will need to restructure the squad this summer, stating the departures of Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo will be part of the process.

The club’s withdrawal from Europe last month means it is experiencing its worst trophy drought in 40 years, with the club’s last piece of silverware being the Europa League success in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Rooney addressed a number of concerns plaguing his former club at a time when United is still fighting for a place in next season’s Champions League…

“It’s been an odd season,” Rooney said to Sky Sports. “I’ve been to the ground a few times to view them live, and they appear to be a group of individuals.” When they make a mistake, it always appears that they will struggle to recover as a team.

“I can look at it and say it hasn’t been good enough, because we have that set of guys who need to do better.” They’re going through a difficult period as a club, and I think everyone wants them to resolve the manager situation as soon as possible, and they need to rebuild for the next two or three years to ensure they’re competitive again.”

Rangnick believes it will take 18 months or “two or three transfer windows” for United to be able to compete for the Premier League title again.

“Absolutely,” Rooney replied. If Manchester United does not want to compete, I believe they would like the season to end now and forget about the Champions League. Even if they qualified, they will not compete in the competition as it now stands.

“They have to rebuild the roster and everything around the first team and the club to ensure that in two or three years’ time, they can truly go and contend for the Premier League again.”

There has been a lot of discussion about who should take over at Manchester United.

and added that if he decides to take the “next step” in his management career, he thinks Ajax will understand.

It’s also been suggested that United had approached Pochettino about becoming the club’s next manager.

When comparing Pochettino to Ten Hag, Rooney believes Pochettino is better qualified to take over in the dugout.

Rooney stated, “I think Pochettino has done it in the Premier League.” “He knows the Premier League, and he brought a lot of guys through at Tottenham.” He also did it in Southampton.

“If I had to pick between the two, that’s who I’d go with.” He would need time to lay out his design for the club and the team. I think he’d do well if you gave him some time.”

‘It’s time for Pogba to move on.’
Pogba’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he appears to be the first of many departures from the club in the following months.

Rooney made it clear that he would not get in the way of the Frenchman.

“I believe he’s reached a stage where it’s probably best for him to move on.” “If Paul is honest with himself, he hasn’t had the influence he’d like since returning to Manchester United,” he remarked.

“I’ve seen him play for France, and he’s an entirely different player.” France always has the skill, vision, and control of the game. It hasn’t worked out for him at United, and there are a few players who need to be let go.

“There hasn’t been a stable manager there since Sir Alex Ferguson, so whoever comes in needs time to create relationships with the players.”
