Ralf Rangnick has been in the post on an interim basis since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November, but he is likely to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season and relinquish control of the team.

United has expressed an interest in Ten Hag, who has led Ajax to two Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups since taking over in December 2017.

Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Manchester United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, has also been connected with the Old Trafford club.

Ferdinand thinks United fans must support Ten Hag if he is chosen as the club’s next manager, but he warns his former club that this is a crucial appointment.

‘Erik ten Hag is on the list, as is Mauricio Pochettino. Listen, if it’s Ten Hag, we have to back him up. But, gosh, this is a big decision.

‘This is the one that is now changing everything at the club. This is the one who must drive the club’s path to success, consistent success, in order for the club to challenge again.

‘It’s a big decision for you, man. This is a huge, huge meeting because we’ve been in a poor condition for far too long.

‘It’s about the club’s culture. You need someone who can instill the proper culture.’

Earlier this week, fellow Manchester United veteran Gary Neville stated that he prefers Pochettino to Ten Hag.

‘Perhaps Pochettino, but Ten Hag is the overwhelming favorite of United fans to lead the club forward,’ Neville tweeted on social media. ‘If there is a clear choice between those two.’
