Ronaldo is United’s leading scorer this season, but reports say the 37-year-old may be considering a move away. United’s participation in the Champions League next season is in jeopardy, as they will conclude this season without a title after being eliminated from Europe’s top club competition by Atletico Madrid.

According to certain sources, Ronaldo will not finish his contract without the prospect of playing in the Champions League. Ferdinand mentioned this in an interview with talkSPORT, but he still believes the Portuguese star should stay at Old Trafford for another season.

“I don’t think he’ll leave,” he remarked. “Cristiano has to stay for another season, even if Manchester United does not finish in the top four.

“He does want to compete, and he has a strong drive to win prizes. He’s used to it, and he’s used to winning, but perfection isn’t always possible.

“He’s had a near-perfect career run, and Ronaldo hasn’t had the Champions League music playing in his ears on a European night… I’m not sure what he’ll think if he has to listen to a different soundtrack.”

United is a long shot to make the Champions League next season. They are now in sixth place, four points behind Arsenal in fourth place, who have a game in hand on Ralf Rangnick’s side.
