Manchester City defender Walker was left out, as were Manchester United’s Rashford and Sancho, although Ben White returned to the team after a strong performance at Arsenal.

Guehi, a former Chelsea youth player, captained Lee Carsley’s Under-21 side during the last international break and has been rewarded for his efforts with his first senior call-up.

Guehi’s efforts in key games for Palace have earned him his first England call-up, according to Southgate.

“With Marc, he has had a really consistent season, and I have been really impressed on and off the ball,” Southgate added.

“He’s been incredibly calm in the big games; we know a lot about him from the younger teams.” There are a few center-halves vying for a spot, but we’ve settled on Marc and Ben White.”

“There are other attacking players in our group who, in our opinion, are ahead of him,” Southgate said of Sancho. Jadon’s performances have improved in recent weeks, although this is an area of the field where we have competition for positions.

“With Marcus, he is in the same situation as everyone else; whether they are in the squad or not, they all have to play well in the next period; it is a difficult time for him; he is clearly not at his best.”

“We have plenty of time; we know Marcus and what he can offer to us.”
