  • Ronaldo sat out the 6-1 victory over Switzerland.
  • Felix expressed amazement at the decision.
  • However, he applauded Ronaldo for his reaction.

WHAT OCCURRED? Fernando Santos astonished everyone by benching Ronaldo for Portugal’s last-16 match against Switzerland when Goncalo Ramos scored a hat trick in a crushing 6-1 triumph. The shock factor appears to have extended to the national team camp, though Felix stressed that the 37-year-old never made it an issue with the rest of the squad.

“We were astonished since seeing Cristiano on the bench is not something you’re used to,” they said “Felix stated this in an interview with the Spanish news agency AS. “But it was the gaffer’s decision: he’s the one who makes the final decision. Cristiano responded admirably because we were all pulling in the same direction and sending out positive vibrations. His reply was excellent for the rest of us since he sought to reassure the team and demonstrate that we were all in this together. It was quite beneficial to us, and he continued to be a tremendous help in every aspect.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Ramos’ three-goal tally secured him a place in the quarter-final line-up over Ronaldo. However, Santos’ team was defeated by tournament favorites Morocco, despite the 37-year-appearance olds in the second half. Ronaldo’s decision to join Al-Nassr, which is now setting records in Saudi Arabia, did not surprise Felix, who stated: “In Europe, there was nothing left for him to win. He’s put his name into history, and now he’s going to write his name into Saudi Arabian history.”
