Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United make first move to sign new “box office” star alongside Mount

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United officials met with Inter Millan goalkeeper Andre Onana's agent.

What is the most recent Manchester United transfer rumor concerning Onana?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag appear to be making serious efforts in the transfer market, with Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount appearing to be the club’s first high-profile signing of the summer.

After two rejected bids, Old Trafford is reportedly closing down on a £60 million deal for the England international, with Mount and United already agreeing on a five-year contract.

However, it appears that the club will not stop there, and with David de Gea’s future uncertain, with his contract scheduled to expire at the end of the month, Onana, who worked with Ten Hag at Ajax, has surfaced as a serious target.

Man United was earlier said to be in a pole position to recruit the goalkeeper, who Mark Goldbridge called as “box office to watch when he’s got the ball under pressure,” and a new update has been revealed.

According to Romano, Man United met with Onana’s agent, Albert Botines, in the previous 48 hours, with the Cameroon international believed to cost over €50 million (£42.9 million).

“Today, Andre Onana’s agent, Albert Botines, met with Manchester United in person.”

“Manchester United are approaching goalkeepers to explore options in the event that David de Gea leaves — the final decision on that one is still pending.” Inter will not sell Onana for less than €50 million plus add-ons.”

Is David de Gea on his way out of Manchester United?

Ten Hag may be left with a severe lack of goalkeeping options heading into the new season. As previously stated, De Gea’s contract expires at the end of the month, and David Ornstein has stated that a departure is a possibility.

Along with the Spaniard, Dean Henderson has been linked with a permanent move to Nottingham Forest following his loan stay last season, and if both leave, United will be left with only 37-year-old Tom Heaton.

As a result, pursuing someone like Onana, who has recently finished a strong debut season with Inter Milan, maintaining 19 clean sheets in 41 games and receiving accolades from Pep Guardiola after the Champions League final, appears to be a wise move. It appears that a move is in the cards, and it will be interesting to watch if United makes a formal offer in the coming weeks.
