Erik ten Hag praised David de Gea’s performance in Manchester United’s tense FA Cup semi-final victory over Brighton.

The goalkeeper for Manchester United made a great second-half stop to deny Julio Enciso and then denied Solly March’s low shot in extra time as the game ended goalless after 120 minutes at Wembley.

While De Gea saved none of the seven penalties he faced in the shootout, March blazed his spot-kick over the bar, allowing Victor Lindelof to step up and strike the top corner, sending United into the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City on June 3.

It was a much-needed response from United following their tepid Europa League defeat to Sevilla, in which De Gea was one among the players who made major individual blunders.

He, like United as a whole, improved at Wembley, and Ten Hag heaped praise on his goalie after the game.

“I was very impressed with him,” said Ten Hag on BBC One. “He made some spectacular saves.”

“It was upsetting when he made blunders on Thursday. When you make mistakes as a goalie, you are frequently punished. We let him down by failing to fight for him. We did, however, recover today.”

With the Carabao Cup already secured, United can add a second trophy to their collection when they return to Wembley in early June, potentially derailing City’s treble push, which may still be on track at that point.

This season, United have established a practice of reacting to setbacks, and their boss was relieved to see them do so against Brighton after such a dismal performance in Spain.

“On Thursday, I saw a team I didn’t recognize, but today we returned to normal,” Ten Hag explained.

“I saw determination and resilience.” We competed in every combat and fought for every yard. We stood a strong chance.”
