A despondent Manchester United’s David de Gea bemoaned ‘another horrible year’ as Atletico Madrid knocked them out of the Champions League.
With Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, United have now gone five seasons without a trophy, and De Gea, who joined United shortly after the club’s last Champions League final appearance in 2011, has only four winner’s medals to his name.
United, according to De Gea, “require much more” from everyone. “It’s difficult to put into words how I, and we, feel,” he stated. “It’s another difficult moment for us; what we accomplished to overcome Atletico Madrid in two games wasn’t enough.” They’re a veteran club that knows how to play those games well, and we’re in a tough spot right now.
“It’s never easy to exit the Champions League, especially the manner we did.” We drew well in Madrid, so we’ll play in front of the home crowd here. To be honest, if we don’t win the game, we’re out for another year; it’s been a difficult year for us.
“You’re correct, we’ve been without trophies for too long, and now we’re battling for them.” So, I believe we must be clear that we want to do excellent things and compete for prizes.
“We don’t simply want to play for the top four and be there; we don’t want to be knocked out of the Champions League before the quarter-finals, so we need a lot more from everyone because this club is too large for where we are currently.” We are still a long way from competing for Premier League and Champions League spots. Everyone must contribute significantly more.
“Of course, we all want the best for the club, especially myself; I’ve been here for a long time and I adore it.” You watched the supporters today; they’ve been incredible yet again in a difficult season.
