If Manchester United has learned anything over the last week (and a half), it is that patience is essential. A humbling derby day setback served as a brutal reminder of how far this side still has to go, while comeback victories over Omonia and Everton highlighted the work that still to is done before they can win those types of games by comfortable margins.

Patience was also a significant factor in the 2-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday night, as goals from Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo secured a crucial three points to boost their league campaign.

United needed to keep their cool to gradually work their way back into the game and control a frenetic home crowd, rejecting the urge to go all-in in a desperate attempt to equalize after Alex Iwobi’s early opening.

The result was a well-deserved victory, a resounding endorsement of the style of play Ten Hag is attempting to establish, and justification for their more methodical approach, which is centered on taking the time to make the right pass rather than simply moving the ball on.

United’s two goals came as a result of direct and incisive passing play, this time getting right to the point with clinical forward passes that sliced open the opposing defense.

However, the build-up play later in the game was equally brilliant, as United demonstrated that they can also generate chances through patience and deliberately breaking down their opponents to create space that wasn’t previously there.

United collected the ball in their own half for 40 seconds before probing the Everton defense with a 17-pass play that saw them patiently wait for spaces to materialize before stepping up the pace and producing a clear chance at goal.

Marcus Rashford started the move by collecting the ball within his own half before playing a fast one-two with Ronaldo behind the halfway line. England forward then passed the ball back to Christian Eriksen, who blasted the ball out wide to Bruno Fernandes on the touchline.

The Portuguese dragged the Everton defense with him down the left flank before cutting back inside and passing to Eriksen. The Dane then delivered the ball back where it came from, this time to Rashford, who dropped deep to regain possession.

Everton’s defense was all over the place at first, but it gradually got back into form. United felt the momentum had shifted and wisely passed the ball back to Luke Shaw on the halfway line to re-establish it.

This time, Shaw and Eriksen played a quick one-two, Fernandes sprinted inside off the ball, and Rashford was left with space on the left flank to pick up a pass.

United increased the tempo. Rashford burst forward and prodded a pass forward to Fernandes, who played it back to the unmarked Eriksen in a deeper position.

Everton was stretched even further when the Denmark international blasted a superb pass to Antony on the opposite wing, pulling the opposition defense from right to left and creating massive gaps in behind.

Casemiro sent in a magnificent first-time cross for Antony, but Ronaldo rose too late and headed over the bar from a few yards away.

In previous years, United could have run out of ideas in such a position and panicked when Everton rallied midway through the transfer.

The approach is different under Ten Hag, and while there is still much work to be done in terms of their approach play, it is plain to see their growing confidence as well as an ability to adapt on the fly to the larger circumstances around them.

Without going full Gary Barlow, it comes down to patience once more. United are showing flashes of potential, but it will require time to mature. Highs must be balanced against recent lows, and little blunders must be tolerated as part of the overall learning process.

United are still a long way from where they want to be, but they are getting closer all the time.
