He has been in international action for Brazil, where he played the full 90 minutes of their 1-1 draw with Ecuador last week before being an unused substitute in their 4-0 win against Paraguay.

His international commitments may have jeopardized his availability for tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth-round match against Middlesbrough.

The game being moved to Friday night didn’t help, and the only time he has been left out of a Premier League matchday squad this season was following international duty against Leicester in October.

However, he has posted a photo on Instagram stating that he will be back at the training field on Thursday, implying that he will be available to play Chris Wilder’s men.

His lack of involvement against Paraguay is also a plus, and he has a good chance of facing Boro.

Ralf Rangnick may be tempted to rotate his players, but he must field a team capable of winning the game.

Furthermore, certain marginal players, such as Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek, have been sent away, leaving the German with fewer players who may require sharpening and gametime.

Wilder’s team is energetic and physical, and it is in games like this that Fred and Scott McTominay are needed.

Rangnick has had Fred play significantly higher up in a 4-3-3 style recently, allowing him to go and push the ball.

While it would be surprising to see Paul Pogba play against Boro, given Rangnick’s cautious approach to injury rehabilitation, it does provide him another alternative and additional competition for Fred.
