Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola addressed the discussion around Lisandro Martinez’s height before of Manchester United’s visit by praising the defender.

Some believe the Argentine’s 5ft 9in height will be an issue against City attacker Erling Haaland, who stands at 6ft 4in. Jamie Carragher, who ordered Martinez to “stay away” from Haaland during Sunday’s game, is one of many concerned about the height disparity.

The City striker has 14 goals in nine Blues games and scored for Norway against Slovenia during the international break. Although only two of his goals have been headers, some fear that his physicality will be too much for the United defense to handle.

Martinez faced Haaland in multiple one-on-ones during Ajax’s 4-0 Champions League victory against Borussia Dortmund last October. On that occasion, he expertly kept the 22-year-old from accessing the internet.

Guardiola acknowledged the height disparity between Haaland and Martinez during a press conference before of the Manchester derby on Friday, but refused to elaborate further. Instead, he praised United’s summer signing for his qualities.

“Erling is definitely taller. “I enjoy it when people underestimate players based on their size,” he remarked. “He can inform them that I am present and a capable player.”

“He’s a superb player, aggressive and well-built. Erik [ten Hag] knows who paid United for this money. It’s not the first time he’s faced taller strikers, and he handles it well. It is critical to be intelligent and fearless. We’ll see what happens with the crosses now that Erling is higher.”
