Paul Pogba to make shocking contract u-turn on one condition
Paul Pogba, the star midfielder for Manchester United, was supposed to leave in the summer, but could potentially stay after an unexpected U-turn.
The World Cup champion is “open to staying” at United and extending his six-year contract, according to The Sun, but only if Ralf Rangnick is named the club’s permanent manager.
Rangnick took up the United job on an interim basis in the autumn when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired, and he is poised to move into a consultancy role once his current contract expires. In the dugout, the 63-year-old has had mixed fortunes, most recently losing on penalties to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.
Pogba has only played once under Rangnick, in last Friday’s FA Cup fourth round loss, and has struggled since coming to the gloomy city for a then-record £89 million following Euro 2016. The 28-year-old clashed with Jose Mourinho, the club’s owner, and struggled to fit into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s system, shifting to a left-wing position.
Pogba returned to a midfield role last week after spending much of Rangnick’s interim stay on the sidelines with an injury, and he might play there under the next manager United hires, with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik Ten Hag being the main rumours.
If Pogba were to depart, the most likely destinations would appear to be Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, or Real Madrid.
