Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s tunnel incident on Wednesday night, Chelsea manager Graham Potter appeared to support Erik ten Hag’s decision to drop the striker from his squad. Ronaldo hobbled down the tunnel following United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on midweek and has been left out of the team for the forthcoming meeting at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

The Portuguese international practiced alone at Carrington on Friday and will not go to London for Saturday night’s Premier League match against Potter’s side.

During his news conference, Ten Hag confirmed that Ronaldo had declined to play against Tottenham, with the former Real Madrid man walking down the tunnel before the final whistle.

Blues manager Potter said he didn’t want to comment on the subject, but noted managers must sometimes make difficult decisions.

“Well, I can’t really comment because I don’t know the ins and outs,” Potter said when asked what he thought of Ten Hag’s handling of the Ronaldo problem.

“But he’s taken his stance, which is sometimes necessary.” And then you need the support of the club, which is what has happened.’

“Well, it’s difficult for me to say because I don’t know the entire context, I don’t know what’s really happened, I don’t want to go off headlines and stuff like that,” the 47-year-old said when asked if he would have taken the same approach.

“It’s part of the job to make difficult decisions, but that’s natural.”

Potter has already defeated United this season as manager of Brighton, with the Seagulls winning 2-1 in August.
