Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s leaving, Manchester United is extensively connected with a transfer for the Netherlands’ World Cup star in the coming months. Following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, in which he claimed to have little regard for manager Erik ten Hag, the Portuguese’s contract was amicably ended last week.

Despite initially only intending to move for a new striker in the summer, his departure leaves United with just the injury-prone Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as key attacking options, potentially forcing them to join the January market. Gakpo, a PSV Eindhoven player who typically plays on the sides, has made an impression up front at the World Cup, scoring great goals against Senegal and Ecuador.

The 23-year-old was first connected to United in the summer, but the team decided to sign Antony instead. United is now being associated with yet another transfer. Gakpo responded, as quoted by The Athletic when asked if he would be open to switching teams in January: “Right now I’m busy with the Dutch team. In the winter, I’ll monitor the situation. Anything is possible in football.

I’m currently concentrating on the World Cup. Though it’s always good to hear, I just concentrate on this and try my best. I’m not afraid of the rumors. But it’s a team sport; nobody plays on their own. I would much rather it be about the team. Thoughtful things are written, but I’m not really bothered with it.

I’m not shocked. Even if I am aware of my potential, achieving my best level is never easy. I still have a lot of room for improvement.

“I am aware that I have two goals in this World Cup. However, that is not the current focus. I want to support the squad and I can get better. In the end, being the best team is what matters.
