United captain Maguire paired Raphael Varane at the heart of the Red Devils’ defense in the 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford, which resulted in a 2-1 aggregate loss and elimination from the Champions League.
It effectively eliminates United’s chances of winning a trophy in a season in which everyone involved has been chastised for one reason or another.
But probably no one more than Maguire, whose place on the team has been called into question on numerous occasions.
Scholes told BT Sport: “The manager has shown faith in him to keep playing him given the form he’s been in.” What concerns me is what this says about [Victor] Lindelof.
“When he’s played, Lindelof has performed admirably. Nice and steady, with few errors. “It appears that everything Harry does is a colossal failure.”
Rio Ferdinand, another commentator, remarked, “I think Rangnick is giving him a chance to produce.”
“He’s the football club’s captain.” In general, captains of football clubs play. Harry will be aware that he has been battling with form recently – and when it’s going against you, you tend to be penalized for making the same mistakes again and over.”
Ferdinand also believes United’s season is done and wonders if top managers will avoid the assignment at Old Trafford.
“For Manchester United, the season appears to be done – what is there to genuinely achieve?” On BT Sport, he stated.
“(In the Premier League, United) are trailing Arsenal even if they win their games in hand.”
“Tonight was truly a mirror of how the season has been — there have been periods when they have been good, but far too frequently it has been Jekyll and Hyde performances.” We didn’t see enough of it.”
“There’s so much work to be done at Old Trafford,” Ferdinand stated of the reconstruction project.
“If you want to come here, it’s a terrific project to be a part of, but I think managers would look at other clubs because there’s less pressure when the spotlight isn’t as intense.”
