According to 90min, Manchester United is ready to meet with David de Gea to discuss his long-term future with the club.
The 31-year-contract old’s at Old Trafford expires in 18 months, although United has the option to extend it for another year.
De Gea is one of the highest-paid goalkeepers in the world, and he has been in superb form in recent months, eliminating the niggling errors that had many calling for academy product Dean Henderson to take his place as United’s number one.
The Spaniard told United’s website in December that he wants to stay at the club in the long run, and 90min understands that the club is willing to meet with De Gea and his advisors to confirm that wish.
“Hopefully, there will be more years and trophies in the future,” De Gea remarked at the time. “More good times to be had.” So, what do I have to say? I’m incredibly pleased of what I’ve accomplished for this club and to have worn this badge. It’s incredible. I’m in one of the best physical shapes of my life. I’m in great shape.
“Some people may mistakenly believe I’m older since I’ve been in the game for a long time, but I’m still a young goalie.” I’m still learning every day and giving it my all in training, so perhaps there will be more years and games ahead.”
United expects to begin discussions with De Gea, who has spent more than a decade at Old Trafford, this year, knowing that any prospective contract extension might carry him all the way to the conclusion of his career.
Henderson, who signed a lucrative contract extension with United in August 2020 after a successful two-year loan spell at Sheffield United, has already recognized that he needs to go to play regular first-team games – either on loan or permanently.
After Newcastle made an offer on deadline day, Henderson almost achieved his wish of a move, but their proposal was rejected, and even their willingness to trade Martin Dubravka in the opposite direction was not enough to seal the deal.
