Spurs paid £27 million (BBC) to purchase the talented Dutch winger in January 2020, and while he started out his career in North London in stunning fashion, things haven’t gone quite as well for him.
Bergwijn has been at Tottenham for a little over two years, but he has only started 25 Premier League games. That is insufficient for a player of his caliber, but there is little he can do to improve circumstances.
The 24-year-old, described by Antonio Conte as a player with “unique attributes,” was on the verge of leaving Spurs in January, with Ajax prominently connected with a deal. That didn’t happen back then, but there’s a significant chance it will this summer.

Bergwijn’s return to Holland has been planned for some months, and Dutch giants Ajax regard him as an ideal match for their group. Driessen is confident that the Dutchman wants to make the same move.

There is no doubt that Bergwijn is a tremendously talented player. Is he ever going to be higher up the pecking order than Son Heung-min or Dejan Kulusevski? No, we don’t believe so.
This puts the 24-year-old in a terrible situation.
With the World Cup coming up at the end of the year, Bergwijn will need consistent game time if he is to make the Dutch national squad.
Staying at Spurs would simply not benefit him, therefore a transfer elsewhere this summer is his best choice.
