The United captain has had a long run of bad luck this season, which has been a disaster for the team. Last summer, the 29-year-old dazzled during England’s journey to the Euro 2020 final, but he has struggled to reach the same heights for his domestic side in the previous year.

Supporters have questioned Maguire’s status in the team, as well as his captaincy, as United’s chances of finishing in the top four have dwindled. United appears to be out of contention for the Champions League next season after losing to Everton on Saturday, leaving them six points behind fourth place with only seven games remaining.

At various stages this season, interim manager Ralf Rangnick and his predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have rallied around Maguire. With little to play for the rest of the season, former United defender Nemanja Vidic believes it may be in Maguire’s best interests to be left out.

“At some point in his career, every player has a form problem,” Vidic told The Athletic.

“I did, and it’s evident that Maguire isn’t having the best season of his career.” I believe you can do a few things, one of which is to refrain from playing every match while you strive to regain your form and confidence.

“A coach might put him in easy games, which aren’t many in the Premier League, and then bring him out for the tougher ones. The athlete must regain his sense of power and strength on the field, rather than feeling as if it isn’t occurring for him right now.

“It’s difficult to play effectively when you’re under a lot of pressure because everyone is expecting you to make a mistake.” You’ve asked me a question, and I’m responding as a coach.”

“It’s not a problem if a player tells his coach that he’s not feeling well on the field,” Vidic remarked. If he says, “Allow me a break, give me a couple of weeks to regroup and train properly, and then I’ll play again,” you should listen. I’d had a few of bad games for United and wanted to regroup and progress.”
